A Report On The E-C Translation Of Attributive Clauses In Human Factors In The Maritime Domain

Human Factors in the Maritime Domain is a book on the influence of human factors in the maritime domain on the basis of a large number of reviews and researches.It is valuable to translate it into Chinese in order to protect both the shipping safety and maritime environment.A distinctive feature of English maritime documents is that there are plenty of long and complex sentences.Based on the functional equivalence theory,the report adopts the research methods of both qualitative and quantitative analysis and focuses on the translating methods of attributive clauses collected in Human Factors in the Maritime Domain.On the basis of analysis,the report has reached the following conclusions concerning the translating methods for attributive clauses in this report:translating the attributive clause into(1)a prepositive attribute(mostly used in attributive clauses with"that");(2)a coordinate clauses(mostly used in attributive clauses with "which");(3)a clause with the antecedent as its subject;(4)an adverbial clause.Besides,it is found that while translating attributive clauses,the translator should consider the length of the attributive clause,find the very antecedent the attributive clause modifies,and analyze the logical structure of the attributive clause.Then the translator should flexibly adopt appropriate translating methods based on a full understanding of the context to ensure that a clear and coherent translated text is made that is loyal to the original text,fluent and complied with the style of maritime text.
