A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Attributive Clauses In Encyclopedia Of Ship Technology

The translation report is on the basis of the translation program of Encyclopedia of Ship Technology,an online dictionary,which includes professional vocabularies and definitions in the ship technology.Being highly specialized,it is characterized by appropriate words and well-knit structures.Therefore,the version needs to achieve objectivity,accuracy and conciseness in translating these technical materials.The report is designed to study the translation methods of attributive clauses in the material.The functions of attributive clauses are divided into that of restriction and that of description.Guided by Skopos Theory,and in line with the attributive clauses in the source text and function of restriction and description,the translation analysis is conducted from relatives of attributive clauses,restrictive and non-restrictive attributive clauses and special structures of attributive clauses.In doing so,four methods are summarized to translate the attributive clauses into Chinese attributes,adverbials,simple or compound sentences.As attributive clauses is a special but normal grammatical phenomenon in the English languange,the author aims to garner better and more native translation of attributive clauses consequently making the version faithful to the original text and easy to read through these four methods.
