A Report On The Translation Of A Glimpse At Happiness

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of the third to fifth chapters of A Glimpse at Happiness by an English novelist Jean·Fullerton. This is a love story that took ground in Victoria England. When Josie O’Casey returned to London after twelve years in America, she was overjoyed to discover that her childhood sweetheart Patrick Nolan, whom she believed to be slept at the bottom of sea forever, was still alive and well. However, everything had changed- Patrick already got married and had two children. Heartbroken, Josie vowed to forget Patrick and settled back into her normal life.Josie’s family social status had vastly improved since her mother married her step father-a famous doctor. While Patrick and his family were still striving in the old house in the slum of London. Their chance at happiness was threatened by the class conflicts and the cultural differences. They forsaked everything for their love, and finally overcame all kinds of difficulties to get a happy ending.This report consists of six chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the reason why the author writes this report. The second chapter includes the general introduction of the novel, the investigation of the background, the preparation of the translation tools, the choice of the translation strategy and the schedule of translation. The third chapter mainly discusses lexical translation skills and translation techniques of sentences. The fourth chapter is about the case study, based on Figure and Ground Theory, the author focus on analyzing the when-adverbial clauses, if-adverbial clauses and because-adverbial clauses. Chapter five is about the proof-reading of the translation and the quality control. And the final chapter summarizes the experience achieved during the course of this translation.
