Network gender appellations refer to a group of gender appellations generated in the Internet context. With the change of communicative patterns, gender appellations have taken on new features. The era of Internet has witnessed the prevalence of new gender appellations and their unconventional usage. An analysis of this group of appellations from the linguistics perspective will not only help identify the evolving and characteristics of gender appellations in the Internet context, but also examine how gender appellations are influenced by the Internet. This thesis collects a total of 502 cases of network gender appellations and conducts a comprehensive study on network gender appellations with the assistance of such methods as qualitative and quantitative analysis, comparative study and case analysis in terms of their etymology, formation, types, characteristics and cultural connotation.Compared with traditional gender appellations, network gender appellations are occupied by more foreign appellations.Besides, with the diversification of etymology, more types of network gender appellations are formed in a variety of ways.Based on the relation between gender orientation and gender marking, network gender appellations can fall into two categories, namely marked appellations and unmarked appellations.Marked appellations can be further divided into parallel-marked appellations,opposite-marked appellations and mixed-marked appellations.Specifically, there are 408 parallel-marked appellations, accounting for 81.27%of the total,16 opposite-marked appellations for 3.19%,six mixed-marked appellations for 1.20%,and 72 unmarked appellations for 14.34%.As a whole, network gender appellations are characterized by timeliness and an increasing number of multi-syllable words, media words and words with quasi-affixes,which embodies cultural connotations of feminist culture, gay culture and cross gender culture.
