Appellation plays a big part in our daily communication. It is the part of a language that directly reflects interpersonal relationship in our society. The past decade has seen lots of new appellations coming into existence. These newborn appellations are widely used, some of which have been added to dictionaries. The families of newborn appellations attract our interest.The amount of newly invented appellations used by netizens is huge. These coinages renew quickly. Some are highly vital, others disappear shortly after their invention. To outline the regular pattern and characteristic of new appellation families conduces to deepening lexicological study of Chinese. This paper presents an all-round description of new appellations.The thesis consists of five chapters.The introductory chapter describes the subject, objective and methods of our research and gives a general picture of earlier researches.In the second chapter, we group new appellations into different categories, and each category is adequately described and fully exemplified.The third chapter deals with the quasi-affixation of the head of appellations. We give a definition of quasi-affix and discuss the features of quasi-affixes.In the fourth chapter, we depict the vitality of new appellations.In the conclusive chapter, we summarize the main ideas of this thesis.
