This is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text of the translation practice is The Political Role of Mongol Buddhism(Chapters 8-9),written by American Mongolian historian Larry William Moses and published in 1977.The source text consists of 11 chapters in total, and the selected chapters are the Chapter 8 “The Initial Onslaught” and the Chapter 9 “The Legal Campaign”.The book mainly tells us the historical events and the changes of relationship between the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party(MPRP)and the Mongolian Lamaism. And the selected chapters mainly introduce the tensions between Mongolian Lamaism and the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party from 1928 to 1936,including the early strike of the Revolutionary Party on Lamaism in 1928,and the legal movement from 1932 to 1936,in which the Revolutionary Party promised to stop the illegal persecution of religion and take actions against illegal activities according to the law.In the process of translating, there are so many problems relating to the Mongolian religious culture and Buddhist language.Among which, the lexical difficulties contain the translation of Lamaism terminologies and Mongolian units;and the syntactic difficulties contain the translation of non-restrictive attributive clauses, sentences with semantic understanding difficulties and logical relationship difficulties;and lastly, the textual aspects, including the difficulties about state authority, ethnic relationship and subjective judgments to historical facts. Then this report analyzes and elaborates on the methods to solve these problems. For lexis, the methods of annotation and transliteration are adopted;for sentences, the translation methods of following the original syntactic order, splitting the original sentences into short parts and reinventing the sentence structures are used, and for the textual difficulties, the methods of adaption, condensed translation and omission are applied respectively. Finally,on the one hand, the content of this work is novel and the text is somewhat difficult to translate. Therefore,in the process of translating, the author can improve her English-Chinese translation ability and strengthen the ability of English understanding and Chinese expression as well;on the other hand, the translation of this text can enhance the target language readers' understanding of the history of Mongolian Lamaism.
