This is an English-Chinese translation report.The ST of the translation project is The Political Role of Mongol Buddhism(chapters 2-3)written by Larry William Moses [1935-2006].Chapter Two of the book is dedicated to the origins of the Mongols,the religious debates among dissidents of various faiths and the revival of the duality of rule.Chapter Three is committed to the tortuous development of Buddhism in the era of the Northern Yüan and the spread of dGe-lugs-pa of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia.The report gives a brief account of project background,significance of the translation project,the structure and translation preparations.An in-depth analysis of the contents and linguistic features of the selected text is made as well.In addition,the report offers a general introduction to the translation tools and expounds the translating process.The ST is a historical monograph,the linguistic features of which are rigorous and meticulous;therefore it is a tough job to appreciate the source language.In the process,what constitutes such difficulties considerably stem from lexical level,syntactic level and textual level respectively.They are(1)the translation of names of religious believers,religious culture-specific terms and parts of speech,(2)the translation of long sentences characterized by complex structures,and(3)the translation of historical events in the Mongol history and quotes on religion.The correspondent translation methods to solve the difficult points are as follows:(1)annotation,choice of meaning and conversion,(2)inversion,division and the change of the voices,and(3)repetition and ellipsis.Finally,the report concludes with a summary of the translation project,limitations and problems to be solved.The translation of The Political Role of Mongol Buddhism(Chapters 2-3)provides references for those who conduct researches on Mongol Buddhism.Moreover,it is conducive to better appreciating Mongol Buddhism for the TT readers and promoting exchanges of Mongol Buddhist culture.
