The E-C Translation Report On The Mongol Art Of War(Chapter Two-Three)

Mongolian expedition military history has been a research focus in the academic circles at home and abroad.The Mongol Art of War(2007)is an academic work,which was finished by a famous American scholar Prof.Timothy May.Written from a unique perspective with rich research materials,this book studies the Mongolian military of Mongol Empire within a systematic framework,including the recruitment,training and equipping,logistics,supply,tactics,leadership,wars and its legacy,etc.The book has received academic recognition and praise,having a great influence overseas.This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The author of this report selects two chapters(Chapter Two to Three)of The Mongol Art of War to translate.The selected source text mainly introduces the recruitment and organization of the Mongol army and the training and equipping of the Mongol warriors.As a military academic work,the source text is difficult to translate because there are many military professional terms and related notes,and its language is formal and rigorous.During the translation process,the translation difficulties are highlighted in three aspects:the translation of Mongolian military terms,the accurate understanding and translation of the notes of the source text,and the overall presentation of historical work style in translation.The Relevance Theory is used to try to solve these translation difficulties.The translator needs to combine the specific context and find the optimal relevance so that the readers can obtain the maximum contextual effect with minimal effort.Specifically,four methods are used in the translation report to solve the translation difficulties:(1)for those Mongolian military weapons which are unfamiliar to the target readers,the related pictures are inserted in the Chinese translation,which can help the target readers understand the source text information from the visual view;(2)different translation methods are adopted in the translation,such as transliteration,amplification,omission,free translation and sentence restructuring;(3)referring to the parallel text,a large number of source text's notes are translated in an objective,complete and accurate way;(4)by using appropriate diction and syntax of the target language,the translation can basically reflect the concise and fluent style of historical text.
