With the vigorous development of international Chinese language education,32 new Confucius Institutes and 90 Confucius Classrooms were added in 2018.By 2018,there were 548 Confucius Institutes in the world,which were distributed in 154 countries and regions around the world.Teaching Chinese as a second language is not only a language teaching,but also a cultural teaching.In cross-cultural communication,folk culture is the most nationalistic culture,which involves all aspects of daily life and can meet the communication needs of learners.This also makes folk culture a vital part of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.This paper selects the series of Boya Chinese as the research object which include eight textbooks with a total of 129 texts in four stages of elementary,quasi-intermediate,intermediate and advanced.It analyzes the main types and presentation methods of folk culture in the textbooks.The study found that the folk culture in Boya Chinese is mainly presented through the main(sub)texts,notes,exercises,language points and supplementary methods.The main types of folk culture are eleven categories,including social etiquette,material life,oral folklore,material production,festival custom,folk beliefs,folk art,social folklore,values,life ceremony and taboo folk.Through statistical analysis of the folklore in the textbooks at four levels,the study finds that the compilation of the folklore is integrity,systemicity,inclusiveness,communication and permeability.And there are also some imperfections,such as the lack of the minority folk culture and the illustration of folk customs.The textbook for teaching Chinese as a foreign language can respond to two fundamental problems in language teaching: what to teach and how to teach.After understanding the folk culture in Boya Chinese,this article begins to think about how to teach related folk culture in the future.Although there isno fixed law,teaching must follow certain principles and emphasize certain methods.When teaching Chinese folk culture,it is necessary to adhere to the principles,such as prioritizing,seeking common ground while reserving differences,and going native.The teaching methods that can be used include direct interpretation,case teaching and cultural practice. |
