An Investigation Of English Reading Obstacles In Senior High School Students

Reading is the main means for English learners to learn language knowledge and understand cultural common sense.The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)proposes that reading skills are an important part of language use ability and puts forward a series of clear requirements for reading skills.Reading comprehension questions also account for more points in various English exams in China.The improvement of reading ability can also promote the development of other skills.Therefore,reading has always been the focus of high school English teaching and learning.Teachers and students have invested a lot of time and energy in reading,but the situation is still not optimistic,students will encounter English reading obstacles more or less in reading.Based on the previous studies,the author analyzes the differences of English reading obstacles and English reading obstacles among students of different classes by questionnaire survey,and uses the school score rate of reading comprehension questions to support the results of the questionnaire survey,analyzes the causes of English reading obstacles through interview records,and then puts forward corresponding countermeasures to improve students' English reading ability and improve high school English reading teaching.The author draws the following conclusions:(1)Among high school students' English reading obstacles,most high school students feel that their linguistic obstacles is more serious than non-linguistic obstacles.(2)Most high school students feel that their biggest English reading obstacles is vocabulary obstacle,then cultural background knowledge obstacle,syntactic obstacle,reading strategy obstacle,text and stylistic obstacle,reading motivation obstacle.(3)The vocabulary,syntax,discourse and style,reading motivation,reading strategy obstacles have significant differences between different class types.In these five aspects,the average score of the students in regular classes is significantly higher than the average score of the students in key classes.Although cultural background knowledge obstacle does not differ significantly between different class types,in this respect the students in regular classes still score higher than the students in key classes.In short,most of the students in regular classes have more severe reading obstacles than the students in key classes.The main causes of English reading obstacles are:(1)Students' vocabulary is small.(2)Students lack cultural background knowledge.(3)Students lack understanding of reading strategies.(4)Students lack reading motivation.In this regard,the author puts forward some countermeasures,the countermeasure can be divided into two parts,the first part is the advice to the students,and the second part is the advice to the teachers.The advice to the students:(1)Break through vocabulary obstacle,follow rules,scientifically remember words,learn word formation knowledge,and guess word meaning according to context.(2)Break through syntactic obstacle,pay attention to learning basic syntactic knowledge of English,understand and master five basic sentence patterns,and understand some special sentence patterns such as inverted sentences and emphasized sentences.(3)Break through stylistic obstacle and understand the characteristics of different styles such as narratives,argumentative papers,explanatory texts and application texts.The advice to the teachers:(1)Discourse teaching.(2)Train students' reading strategies.(3)Cultivate students' reading motivations.(4)Teach students in accordance with their aptitude.
