Reading is not only an important language skill,but also a major means for students to obtain information.Therefore,senior high school English class teaching has always taken the cultivation of students’ reading ability as the top priority of teaching.However,the current teaching of English reading in senior high schools is not effective despite of great investment.Senior high school students’ reading obstacles have seriously affected the improvement of their reading level.It requires that we attach great importance to the teaching and researching of English reading in senior high school,help students overcome reading obstacles and improve their English reading ability.This study takes four classes’ students in a senior high school in H city as the research subject.Based on the previous studies on English reading obstacles,this study,through questionnaire,analyzes the situation of high school students’ English reading obstacles and the differences between boys’ and girls’ English reading obstacles.And the results of the questionnaire are verified by the score rate of the test.Finally,through the interview,the causes of the formation of obstacles are analyzed and the countermeasures to overcome English obstacles are put forward.The study explore the following three questions:1.What English reading obstacles do senior high school students have? 2.Are there any differences in English reading obstacles among senior high school students in different dimensions? 3.Are there any gender differences in English reading obstacles of senior high school students?Research findings of this paper:1.There are two types of obstacles in senior high school students’ English reading: namely,linguistic obstacles and non-linguistic obstacles.And students’ linguistic obstacles is more serious than non-linguistic obstacles.Linguistic obstacles include lexical obstacles,syntactic obstacles,discourse obstacles and stylistic obstacles.The non-linguistic obstacles include cultural background obstacles,reading motivation obstacles,reading habits obstacles and reading strategies obstacles.2.Lexical obstacles and syntactic obstacles are the biggest obstacles for senior high school students in reading,followed by cultural background obstacles,discourse obstacles,reading strategies obstacles,stylistic obstacles,reading motivation obstacles and reading habit obstacles.3.There are gender differences in senior high school students’ English reading obstacles.In general,male students’ obstacles are more serious than female students’.In terms of syntax,discourse,reading motivation and reading strategies,male students have more obstacles than female students.This study analyzes the causes of senior high school students’ obstacles through interviews,and puts forward strategies on how to overcome linguistic obstacles and non-linguistic obstacles respectively.Finally,it also discusses the implications of this study on senior high school English reading teaching and its shortcomings and prospect.
