| At present,high school students’ English scores in rural areas of China are generally not satisfactory due to various reasons.And reading ability is the most direct and effective way for students to absorb English knowledge,the level of reading ability directly affects the quality of inputting English information,which will largely determine the level of students’ future information processing ability.Due to the higher standard requirements of The English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High Schools(2017 Edition)and the exam of the English reading understanding,teachers’ English reading teaching methods need to be changed.This study aims to explore the root causes of rural high school students in English reading comprehension by investigating the obstacles that rural high school students encounter in English reading,and ultimately provide certain constructive suggestions to help improve students’ English reading obstacles.This study is based on schema theory and constructivisit theory,using the research method combined with questionnaire investigation and interviews.It takes Nanning No.56 Middle School as an example to make a questionnaire survey of 944 rural high students from the first to the third grade,then 20 students and 9 teachers are chosen to conduct interviews.The research learns from both language obstacles and non-language obstacles to understand the obstacles encounter in English reading learning.The cause of obstacles are explored as well.Specific research issues are as follows: 1)What obstacles have encountered by rural high school students in English reading? 2)What are the reasons for rural high school students’ English reading obstacles?The study finds that: 1)There are two types of obstacles including language and nonlanguage obstacles for rural high school students encounter in English learning.The language obstacles are difficult to understand the content of English articles and difficult to read English articles.Non-language obstacles include negative English learning attitudes.2)The main obstacles to students’ English reading are: vocabulary,grammar,cultural differences,teaching arrangements,ability training and students’ psychological factors.Finally,based on the research results,this study puts forward some corresponding advice on rural high school English reading teaching and rural high school students’ English reading learning.It is hopeful that this study can help rural high school English reading teaching practice and help to improve students’ reading levels. |
