| One of the primary goals of English instruction in junior high school is to develop students’ reading ability.Through reading,students can enrich basic language knowledge and improve their ability of analysis and generalization.In reading,students can also understand the historical traditions and cultural customs of other countries and cultivate the inter-cultural communicative awareness.Therefore,reading teaching has been paid more and more attention in English,and the reading part accounts for the largest score in various English tests.It can be seen that students’ English performance is largely determined by their reading ability.However,in practice,the English reading ability of junior high school students in the internship school is not optimistic,and many difficulties remain with reading.Based on schema theory,reading model theory,and constructive learning theory,this research investigates the English reading comprehension obstacles of grade 3 students at a junior high school in Hohhot.There are two main research questions in this study: 1.What are the obstacles in English reading of junior high school students? 2.What are the reasons for these English reading obstacles?The author conducted a questionnaire survey on 330 students in the internship school,interviewed 3 teachers and 5 students,then used Excel and SPSS26.0 for data analysis.Finally,it is concluded that students have linguistic and non-linguistic obstacles in English reading.Linguistic obstacles include vocabulary obstacles,grammar obstacles,discourse obstacles,and genre obstacles.Non-linguistic obstacles include cultural background obstacles,reading motivation obstacles,reading habit obstacles,and reading strategy obstacles.The author analyzes the reasons for the obstacles based on the questionnaire survey and interview.The reasons in teachers’ teaching include: teaching content and methods in reading class are single and outdated,and the teaching objective is misguided;insufficient use of teaching resources;backward teaching theory of English reading.The reasons in students’ learning include:insufficient English reading outside the classroom;lack of motivation to read in English;insufficient understanding and application of English reading strategies.According to the students’ English reading obstacles and the causes,this paper proposes some countermeasures from the perspectives of teachers and students.Suggestions for teachers: enrich content in reading class and stimulate students’ interest in reading;take students as the center of reading teaching and create a good environment in class;use interactive reading model for reading teaching;actively update teaching theories of English reading and improve teaching methods;use formative assessment in teaching.Suggestions for students: choose appropriate reading materials and quantify the learning outcomes of words;internalize grammatical concepts and system,and learn to analyze long and difficult sentences;master discourse cohesion and coherence knowledge;be familiar with common topics of English in junior high school and related English stylistic knowledge;expand extracurricular reading,and accumulate knowledge of cultural background;cultivate good reading habits,and consciously use reading strategies such as word guessing in context. |
