This research analyses the translation of Arnold Schwarzenegger's The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding from the perspective of the Skopos theory and focuses on its problems and poses solutions. The corpus used throughout this paper include but are not limited to the Chinese Translation published in 2012 and the original texts of the book issued in 1998.The samples of the corpus fall into three categories according to style:the title, training guidance and theoretical suggestions. This research introduces the three rules of the German functionalist theory(known as the Skopos theory),namely skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule and studies the book and its Chinese translation by using the framework of the theory. How the rules are and are not expressed in the translation process are discussed. Also, analyses from perspectives of lexical and syntactic features are illustrated in the paper.Suggestions and possible amendments are given in this thesis. This thesis holds that the translation of the book principally reflects the rules of the Skopos theory and the skopos rule is strictly followed.Due to different reasons, the three translators sacrificed coherence and fidelity to varying degrees.Via this paper, suggestions are hopefully given to translators to help them find appropriate strategies in their work.
