A Report Of The E-C Translation Of The Product Manual Of HBTS X-FOLD XM100 Packing Machine

Product manual is a comprehensive introduction of the product to the customer, aiming at making a correct and better use of the product. It has distinct characteristics in vocabulary, syntax and discourse. Guided by translation principles:accurate, professional and readable, and the translation strategies of Peter Newmark:semantic translation and communicative translation, the present report describes the case of the English-Chinese translation of the Product Manual of HBTS Packing Machine Type X-FOLD XM100 and puts forward corresponding solutions for common translation problems of manual of mechanical and electrical products in three aspects of vocabulary, sentence and discourse.Of vocabulary, if there is no glossary or when it comes into a polysemy, the translator should take the product function and context into consideration to make a proper choice; analyze sentence structures and translate them into verbs, adjective or clauses when dealing with nouns or noun structures; consult professional backgrounds and try to select the most accurate expressing when facing acronyms and elliptical constructions.Of sentences, use imperative sentences of authority in manuals; carefully analyze the sentence structure in non-predicate structures and translate flexibly them into attributive or adverbial clauses; in dealing with passive sentences, do not always translate them literally. As Chinese has the characteristics of "the active is superior to the passive", translate them into sentences with no subject or even active sentences if necessary.Of discourse, adjust the word order properly or use the method of amplification for smooth cohesion.At last, the author hopes that the report will serve as a reference for similar translation practice so as to improve the translation quality in this field.
