This thesis is a report on the translation of the first chapter “Sometimes they're really dead” and the second chapter “And sometimes they're aren't” of the book An Echo in the Bone written by the famous American writer Diana Gabaldon. The book An Echo in the Bone is the seventh book in the Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon.Centered on the time travel of Doctor Claire Randall from 20 th century and her husband Jamie Fraser,a Scottish Highlander warrior from 18 th century, the book contains elements of historical fiction, romance, adventure and science fantasy. In the source text, the use of V-ing forms is the most frequent linguistic phenomenon. In English grammar, the present participles and gerunds are non-finite forms of verbs. They all have the same V-ing forms. But they differ greatly in the syntactic functions of sentences and the expressions of their logical subjects. The use of V-ing forms are a complex grammatical phenomenon, therefore, attention should be paid on the translation of them.Translators need to understand and grasp their usages, distinctions,as well as their syntactic functions in the sentences, and then translate them. This report expounded the translation methods of V-ing structure from the practical application. In this paper, the translation methods of the V-ing forms were summarized and generalized through the analysis of different contexts, discourses and functions of the V-ing forms, and through the traditional translation methods such as amplification, omission, literal translation, and recasting disconnection methods. This translation report provides a reference for the translation of the novel English, and provides a reference for the translation of the V-ing forms.
