Multimedia which is an auxiliary teaching method is widely used in teaching,especially English teaching.Using multimedia correctly can enrich contents,stimulate students’ interest and make English class more vivid.In 2003,New National English Curriculum Standard clearly pointed out the importance of multimedia English teaching.It requires school to promote the universal application of information technology in classroom and promote the integration of information technology and curriculum so as to improve the quality of English teaching.However,in recent years,some domestic scholars have found that the multimedia assisted instruction has not achieved the ideal effect.The purpose of this paper is to find out the problems in the application of multimedia through a large number of investigations.Then this paper analyzes the situation based on constructivism theory and MAI,and finally makes recommendations.The research mainly includes the following steps.Firstly,questionnaires for teachers and students,classroom observation,sample analysis and interview for students are used to study the current situation of application of multimedia English teaching.Secondly,this paper analyzes the situation based on constructivism theory and MAI.Finally,some suggestions are put forward to optimize the effect of multimedia English teaching.In conclusion: firstly,teachers can not fully understand multimedia.Their purpose of multimedia is convenient for them to teach and present knowledge.But constructivism considers that teaching method and resources serve for students to learn rather than to teach.Secondly,the content of courseware is inappropriate.Too much knowledge is presented in courseware in order to teach conveniently.In MAI,the content or courseware should be enlightening and display key and difficult points.Thirdly,teacher’s computer skills are not very skilled,so there are some problems in making and operating courseware.Finally,the effect of multimedia English teaching is not ideal,which includes the following aspects.(1)Student’s ability of independent learning is not developed.(2)Cooperation and communication between teachers and students are not developed,however constructivism emphasize the importance of it.(3)Learning environment for students is not developed via multimedia.Compared with traditional teaching mode,multimedia can create learning environment for students.Finally,some suggestions are put forward:(1)Teachers should understand multimedia correctly.(2)Teachers should improve their computer skills.(3)Courseware should be enlightening and effective.(4)Teachers should guide students to learn independently.(5)Teachers should construct learning environment and enhance interaction between teachers and students.
