A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The Girl In The Red Coat (Chapter 12 To Chapter 18)

With the acceleration of the process of globalization,international exchanges have become more frequent.As an important part of cultural communication,the translation of literary works has a certain practical and cultural value.This report is based on the English-Chinese translation project of the famous contemporary writer Kate Hamer's The Girl in the Red Coat(Chapter 12 to Chapter 18).The novel,paying attention to psychological description and exquisite writing,tells a story that a divorced mother lost her 8 year old daughter and worked hard to eventually reunite with her daughter.In translating,in order to make the translation text accepted by Chinese readers,the key and difficult point is how to grasp the language characteristics of Chinese and English.On the theoretical guidance of Nida's functional equivalence translation theory,the applicability of functional equivalence theory to fiction translation is demonstrated based on the analysis of source text language and subject matter characteristics.This paper is divided into five parts.The first part is a brief introduction to the project;the second part is the introduction of the preliminary work of translation project;the third part is a brief introduction to Nida's theory of functional equivalence;the fourth part is case analysis,which explains the application of functional equivalence in the translation of novels from two aspects—words and sentences.;the fifth part summarizes the experience of the translation practice and rethinks the shortcomings of the translation practice.
