With the continuous advancement and in-depth development of the “Belt and Road”Initiative,Chinese construction engineering enterprises,with their technological advantages,have spread across the global network,contracted overseas projects,and helped countries of the Third World build all kinds of infrastructure.With the gradual deepening of cooperation in the field of engineering technology,translation has gradually become an important part of the cooperation between Chinese and foreign enterprises.In order to enable the Chinese and foreign parties to carry out the project smoothly,the demand for the translation of engineering contracts is gradually increasing,and the requirements for the quality of contract translation are also increasing.This text is river training works contract from Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project of Power China Harbour Co.,LTD.The original text is in English.The author takes this text as corpus to complete the English-Chinese translation task.As the contract text is both a legal text and a scientific text,its purpose is to accurately convey the information of the text,and it has high requirements for translation quality,therefore,according to the characteristics of the text,this report chooses functional equivalence theory as the theoretical guidance to probe the translation methods of engineering contracts.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is a brief introduction to the full text,including the research background,research content and research significance of this paper.The second chapter introduces the functional equivalence theory and analyses the language features of contract on lexical,syntactic and textual level.Chapter three gives a detailed description of the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,translation stage and post-translation editing,namely the quality control stage.In chapter four,under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,this paper analyzes cases from the perspective of vocabulary,syntax and discourse to discuss the problems encountered in the process of translation and their best solutions based on the differences between English and Chinese.The fifth chapter is a summary of the whole paper,focusing on the main findings,limitations and suggestions for further research.To achieve the semantic equivalence between Chinese and English engineering contracts,the author,under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,mainly adopts translation techniques such as inversion,conversion,omission,addition,division,etc.,and summarizes the translation strategies to achieve functional equivalence between Chinese and English engineering contracts.
