Study On The Philosophy Of Mind By Wan Tingyan

In the "Ming Confucianism case",Huang Zongxi highly affirmed the academic status of Wan Tingyan and Wang Shihuai,whose disciples are the Jiangyou school of the Yangmingism,and said that the pair could "understand the incompleted idea of Yangming".Due to the lack of writing and other reasons,Wan Tingyan's philosophy of mind has not received due attention and research for a long time.Wan Tingyan,as a disciple of Luo Hongxian,is deeply influenced by his learning of "quiet and no desire" and "collecting and preserving".Wan Tingyan was lucky enough to get the education from Wang Longxi,who is of Zhezhong school.Wang Longxi's ideas have a certain degree of influence on Wan Tingyan.Wan Tingyan is the key person in the academic intercourse between Jiangyou school and Zhezhong school.Wan Tingyan and Li Cai are friends for many years,who is the pioneer of Zhixiu school.They often discuss academic issues together.Based on a brief introduction to Wan Tingyan's life and writings,ideological background and academic exchanges,this paper focus on his conscience theory.Taking Wan Tingyan's " Private notes of Da Xue" as the narrative context,this paper expound his thoughts such as Gewu,Zhizhi,Chengyi,Zhengxin and Zhizhishan.Though his philosophy of mind is not far from the aim of Yangmingism,there are also many personal originality and novelty.Wan Tingyan follows Luo Hongxian's way of "quiet and no desire",and has the characteristics of combining Xin with Yi.It also shows its academic path of "return to yourself".Wan Tingyan is one of the few scholars with profound knowledge in late Ming Dynasty.His philosophy of mind can directly enter to Yangmingism's heart,while cultivation efforts are very practical.Wan Tingyan's philosophy can remedy the disadvantages of Zhezhong school and Taizhou school,which are unrealistic even disregard of ethical rules.Wan Tingyan is well versed in Yi Xue.He can combine Yi Xue with the philosophy of mind very well.He is committed to the combination of Zhiliangzhi and Zhizhishan,which can combine ontology with practice.His cultivation efforts of quiet could finally avoid the Buddhism or Taoist school's disadvantages and reach the ideological level of Chongrantaihe.
