A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Essentials Of Genetics(Excerpts)

This is a translation report about a text coming from Essentials of Genetics,a popular science textbook for the beginners,which is used by more than 40 universities in the USA and was introduced into China in 2016.How to translate it to make the target text have the same education effect as it has already made on the source text readers is the problem the translator needs to solve.In the project,through the analysis of the source text which is simple,precise,informative and vocative,Newmark's communicative translation theory is adopted,that is,the translation has to produce the same effect on the target text readers as the source text on the source text readers to guide the translation practice.With the help of all the available resources,this translation task has been smoothly completed.During the translation,some problems have been found and then classified according to the level of the language structure.At lexical level,there are some difficulties in the understanding and the clear translation of technical terms,proper names,some common words with different meanings in specific context fields and conventional expressions.At syntactic level,there are some problems about the translation of the sentence structure and of the passive voice.At textual level,there are the difficulties in the cohesion which includes the understanding and clear translation of reference words and connectives,and in the coherence in the target text.In order to solve the above problems,the translation methods such as paraphrasing,amplifying,omitting,and changing the part of speech of words and the sentence structure are utilized to obtain a smoother,clearer,simpler and more conventional target text.The report is expected to play a positive role in the future translation of biological texts from English to Chinese.
