The relationship between poetry and calligraphy in the middle Tang Dynasty is very close.The paper will focus on it and contribute to the research of poetry and calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty.Studying the relationship is conducive to interpret poetry and calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty.In addition,It contribute to capture the spirit of art of the whole Tang Dynasty.The first chapter of paper points out that the origin of poetry and calligraphy is very deep.They are later than language and grow out of human instinct and pleasure seeking.Both of them regard memory as initial function.Moreover,rhythm is their common soul.The chapter also summarize situation of calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty.The relationship between the poetry and calligraphy in the Tang include similar development,relevant content and practices and ideas of calligraphy from the poets.The second chapter centers on the political,economic and ideological background of the middle Tang Dynasty.Local forces and power of eunuch are social trouble in the time.Meanwhile,literature and art are affected by flourishing mass culture and religion such as Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism.The main reasons for the prosperity of poetry and calligraphy include imperial examination,progress of medium and experience of the predecessors.The third chapter focuses on the calligraphic practice of poet and the poetry about calligraphy.Literary accomplishment,custom and education of family are important reasons why poets do well in calligraphy.Participants of imperial examination are good at calligraphy frequently.The poets and calligraphers have frequent contacts,they like writing in something is firm.The poetry about calligraphy is massive,various,peculiar and mature.Poets can use writing techniques such as analogy,exaggeration and comparison expertly.The fourth chapter analyzes three special masterpieces in the middle Tang Dynasty firstly.Furthermore,both poetics and calligraphy emphasize emotive function,selection of image and innovation.Magnificent,peculiar and comprehensive style are common aesthetic target for the poets and calligraphers.But in the late Tang Dynasty,the style is replaced by fleshless aesthetic standard.
