In recent years, scholars devoted to the study of the calligraphy history in the Song dynasty have conducted a deep study of Xue Shaopeng's life, works and calligraphy thoughts, providing a good research basis for us.Calligraphy poetry,as a kind of calligraphy research literature, has come gradually into our field of vision.According to Cai Xianliang's "Study on the Calligraphy Poetry of the Song Dynasty," "The Complete Collection of Poetry of the Song Dynasty" includes amazingly more than eight hundred calligraphy poems, which could complement the study of the history of the Song Dynasty's calligraphy thoughts and are worth a serious research. This poem by Xue Shaopeng, titled "On Watching Calligraphy at the Royal Library," including over seven hundred Chinese characters, discusses the appreciation of models of calligraphy for practice, assessment of calligraphers, his aesthetic taste of the calligraphy as well as the official and private calligraphy collection situation in the Northern Song Dynasty. This article, through the research of this poem, intends to discuss the origin of Xue Shaopeng's "admiration of calligraphy of Jin and Tang Dynasties" and his calligraphy style.
