A Report On Translation Internship At CSTEP

This report was based on the author's internship at the Center for Science,Technology,Education Policy of Tsinghua University from March 22 th,2017 to January 26 th,2018.During the internship,the author was responsible for both the translation work of several chapters and the proofreading of the two books: Cycles of Invention and Discovery and The Oxford Handbook of Governance and acted as the translation Project Manager(PM).Guided by the German functionalists' Translational Action Theory and “function plus loyalty” put forward by Mantarri and Nord respectively,the author of the present report analyzed the problems she had solved and errors she had corrected during the translation project and her proofreading,putting the translation theories learned at school into the translation practice.Those problems and errors are specifically as follows: misunderstanding of terminology,difficult long sentences,translation of proper nouns,translation of parenthesis,sensitive terms,colloquial expressions,rigid translation,information pretermission and mistranslation,and incorrect punctuation,spelling and text formatting.Chapter 4 shows with examples how the author managed to obtain the intended effect of the project by using flexibly different methods.What is more,this report gave a detailed description of the whole process of the project management,elaborating the importance of the “translation brief”,of the translation plan and that of detailed analyses of each translator before the task.In addition,the report summed up the achievement the author had got from the internship.The internship had not only enhanced her ability of translation between Chinese and English,but also strengthened her management competence.It also had sharpened her sense of responsibility and that of teamwork,laying a solid foundation for her future work,study and life.
