Christiane Nord, one of the scholars of German functionalism, put forward the Function plus Loyalty Theory. The Contrastive Hierarchy in Phonology was published by Cambridge University Press in 2009.The author,B.Elan Dresher is a linguistics professor at the university of Toronto. This book focuses on the contrastive logic, which describes the "contrastive hierarchy theory" and its rise and decline. The writer applies the Function plus Loyalty Theory to the translation process, attempting to make a research for the translation of the academic text from the perspectives of morphology, syntax and discourse based on the relationships among translator, the source-text sender and the target-text addressees. The Contrastive Hierarchy in Phonology is a typical academic text characterized by complicated terminologies and long difficult sentences, which requires the writer to apply some necessary translation strategies with the direction of function plus loyalty theory to guarantee the accurate and objective translations so that the function of the translation can be achieved. The fixed technical terms translation and polysemous terms translation are very important in lexical level. Therefore, the writer must translate these terms accurately in line with the content and context of the book.It is also necessary to use different translation strategies, like voice changes and adjustment of sentences’ order in sentences translation and combination and division in discourse translation,to satisfy readers’ and the source text author’s requirements. The report which conducts the translation practice for academic texts under the guidance of function plus loyalty theory and translation strategies has a certain significance in academic texts translation.
