A Report On The Translation Of An Excerpt From Toward A General Theory Of Translational Action

The translation material used in this translation practice report is selected from Toward a General Theory of Translational Action,which is a monograph on the theory of translation behavior,it is written by Katharina Reiss and Hans J.Vermeer who are representatives of the German functionalist translation theory school in the 1970 s.This book was translated into English in the year of 2013 by Christian Nord,one of the second generation representatives of the German functionalist translation theory school.Nord tried to verify the Skopos Theory and her “Function plus Loyalty” theory by translating this book into a text that was easily understood and received by English readers and scholars.This translation practice report is guided by George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic motion.Based on the translation of the ninth chapter and the tenth chapter of Toward a General Theory of Translational Action,the author analyzes the difficulties during the translation process from the aspects of vocabulary,sentence and discourse cohesion and discusses the appropriate translation skills.This translation practice report consists of the following parts: In the introductory part,the author mainly introduces the background of the translation practice,the original author’s introduction and the purpose of this translation task.The first chapter is the description of the translation task,which mainly explains the source of translation materials,the introduction of the translation content,the analysis of the characteristics of the translation materials and the significance of the translation task.The second chapter is the translation process,which introduces the pre-translation preparation stage,the translation stage and the post-translation review stage.The third chapter is case analysis,which illustrates the difficulties encountered in the translation process and solutions from the aspects of vocabulary,sentence and discourse cohesion.The fourth chapter is the summary of the translation practice,in which the author integrates the practice process and sums up her translation experience and deficiencies.The author has got a deeper understanding of German functionalist translation theory through this translation practice,which opens up her vision in the field of translation.Integrating the experience of her own translation process,the author hopes to provide some help for the translation of such kind of text in the future.
