A Comparative Study Of The Inverted Progressive Compound Sentences And The Retrospective Compound Sentences

To illustrate the differences between the inverted progressive compound sentences and the retrospective compound sentences,this dissertation compares three items:the outside form,the inside meaning and the pragmatic value.In order to discuss the possibility of conversion between the two compound sentences,this essay analyses the progressive distance and the progressive direction.Also,this study follows "the theory of clausal pivot" as the fundamental theory and uses "the theory of two-triangle" as research methods.At the same time,"the theory of subjective viewpoint" is placed importance through the whole research process.This dissertation is divided into six chapters.The first chapter is the 'introduction' of the essay,which introduces the significance and background of the research and clarifies the guiding ideology and the theoretical background of this study.The second chapter is the comparison of the outside form of the two compound sentences,which is divided into three parts.The first part is the comparison among the relation markers through such three angles "former-echo and back-response""prepositive,medial and postpositive" and "strong and weak";the second part is the comparison of former-echo clause by comparing such three aspects:structure types,mood types and the clause unit types;the third part is the comparison of back-response clause,which is compared through the same three aspects as the second part above.The third chapter is the comparison of composite meaning relationships,by discussing the composite mode of meaning between the whole former-echo clause and the whole back-response clause of such two compound sentences,illustrating the relationship of"double-correspondence type" or "triple-correspondence type" of such two kinds of compound sentences.The forth chapter is the comparison of the pragmatic value,divided into two parts:the first part analyses the differences between the generalized pragmatic value and the narrow one;the second part distinguishes the differences between explicit conversational intention and hidden conversational intention.The fifth chapter is to analyses the mutual conversion of the two compound sentences from the angle of progressive distance.Firstly,this part defines the progressive distance,then distinguishes the differences between the two compound sentences and discusses the possibility of mutual conversion lastly.The sixth chapter sums up the research conclusions by following the turns of different parts above.
