Interpreting in ship design and construction is an important part of technical translation. What methods or strategies that the interpreter has adopted deserves to be further explored. In this practice report, the author strives to explore the methods and strategies in this field based on her own interpreting practice---an interpreting task for foreign warship design training by an institute affiliated to China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation(CSIC).This interpreting task lasts for three months.Introducing the interpreting task and recordings of this program, the author categorize the terminologies of warship design, summarized the basic characteristics of ship engineering English, challenges confronted by the interpreter and the interpreting methods and strategies she has employed during this interpreting on warship design under the guidance of the interpretive theory. It is found that translation of ship engineering is encountered with various challenges, such as too many professional terminologies, acronyms and abbreviations, figures and calculations and the passive voice. The interpreter is suggested to flexibly combine different translation techniques to deal with such technical interpreting. In this report, the author will introduce the interpreting task and the interpreting process of this training program on warship design, the characteristics of ship engineering English and the challenges the interpreter encountered during consecutive interpreting emphasizing on various translation strategies and methods the author has adopted through some examples. It is hoped that this report could help those potential interpreters better adapt to this field in the future.
