| Big History is an emerging academic discipline which examines history from a much broader view: it covers the time span from the Big Bang to the present.It examines this extraordinarily long period using a multidisciplinary approach which combines numerous disciplines from science and humanities,and explores human existence in the context of this big picture.It integrates studies of the cosmos,the Earth,life,and humanity using empirical evidences to explore cause-and-effect relations.The translation project Big History,Small World: From the Big Bang to You on which this report is based on just belongs to this category.This book contains twelve chapters,covering themes like the universe,the Big Bang,galaxies and stars,atoms,Earth,evolution of life,human,future and some others.With such a broad range of subjects,the translation of this book from English into Chinese inevitably brings about various difficulties to the translator(s).Before starting the translation project,translators should invest time and energy in pre-translation works which include information processing,understanding of the SL materials,investigation and research of the background information.Moreover,under a strict requirement of high quality(for publishing)and heavy workload,the challenge of translating the book is even greater.In recent years,many scholars have turned their attention to corpus-based translation studies;those researches also made more and more translators realize that parallel corpus could play an increasingly important role in boosting translation efficiency and improving accuracy.With this understanding,translators could construct specific parallel corpus according to the subject matter of the text to be translated;and then,by retrieving and applying of authentic language materials,translators could ensure coherence and accuracy of terminology.The parallel corpus also provides a rich resource of contextual information for translators,which not only facilitates an accurate and thorough understanding of the source text,but also provides exemplar linguistic resources.Finally,it improves the translation accuracy and efficiency when combined with appropriate CAT tools.This report takes the Skopos Theory as the theoretical frame to analyze the translation work.Skopos Theory was established by German linguists Hans Vermeer and Katharina Rei?.It holds that translating and interpreting should primarily take into account the function of the target text.The Skopos Theory includes three major rules:(1)the TT(target text)must be internally coherent;(2)the TT must be coherent with the ST;(3)the TT is determined by its skopos.Therefore,the translator uses this theory to guide the translation work so as to make the target texts more coherent and accurate during the translation process.In the framework of the Skopos Theory,and with the help of parallel corpus,this report proves that parallel corpus can improve translation quality and efficiency,and thus achieve the aims of the translators.Differing form previous studies with more attention to combining theories and texts,this report emphasizes the corpus construction and its application process.The author hopes that this report can provide insights for future application of corpus in translation practice as well as research on corpus-based translation. |
