A Study On Construction Principle And Application Of Chinese-English Parallel Translation Corpus

Corpus is constituted by several electronic texts according to a certain standard ofsampling collection for one or more kinds of applications. Corpus has certainstructure and scale which can be retrieved by computer. Corpus can be classifieddifferently according to different points of view. Parallel corpus belongs to bilingualcorpus. A parallel corpus is a corpus that contains a collection of original texts inlanguage L1and their translations into a set of languages L2. In most cases, parallelcorpora contain data from only two languages. Compared to the dictionary andmonolingual corpus, parallel corpus has its own unique advantages, such as bilingualcontrol, quantities of language examples, etc. Therefore, the conclusion obtainedthrough the corpus research can represent a kind of language, variant or the genre,which will promote the conclusion to the whole language, variant or genre.Corpus linguistics, which is an important branch of linguistics, is linguisticsresearch based on the corpus. On the basis of huge amount of lingual data, corpuslinguistics plays an important role in the corpus conclusion and language theoryconstruction. Therefore, corpus linguistics has become the mainstream of languageresearch and exerts a tremendous influence to language research field. Corpuslinguistics, which is an important branch of linguistics, is linguistics research based onthe corpus. On the basis of huge amount of lingual data, corpus linguistics plays animportant role in the corpus conclusion and language theory construction. Therefore,corpus linguistics has become the mainstream of language research and exerts atremendous influence to language research field.Since the1980s, academic circles of information technology and linguistics paid more and more attention to the construction and application of the corpus. The rapiddevelopment of computer technology also speeds up the development of corpusfurther. The construction of large-scale corpus is difficult since it is a time-consumingengineering and needs the cooperation of several disciplines. Through numerousresearches, the author summarizes the construction experience of previous corpus andtakes the view that constructing a smaller parallel translation corpus is still feasible onthe basis of computer knowledge.In this thesis, the author first detailed the concept and classification of corpus, andelaborated the corpus linguistics and its developing course, then proposed the wholeidea of constructing a parallel corpus and proved the feasibility of idea based on thecase study. Finally, the author studied the great practical value of parallel translationcorpus in fields such as translation practice, translation study and translation teaching.In translation practice, parallel translation corpus provides examples for thetranslation of special Chinese words, the machine translation and the study ofsemantic prosody. In translation study, the research of universality, translators’ styleand translation norm need the support of corpus. In translation teaching, paralleltranslation corpus can provide enough material according to the classroom teachingneed and improve the students’ translation ability.
