A Research On The Subtitle Translation Of Situation Comedy The Big Bang Theory From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Entering the21st century, together with the development of the network, the exchange between domestic and foreign cultures is strengthened day by day. More and more foreign films and television works came into China, and the number of the audience is increasing. The audience would like to see all kinds of foreign audiovisual works, especially those situation comedies. Because of the fast pace and high pressure of our lives, humor is like a lubricant, which can adjust, comfort, and entertain ourselves;what’s more, it can also mediate our pressure. To many Chinese audience, they can enjoy the humorous elements of the situation comedy together with learning local expression of English. In the appreciation of situation comedies, as the mainstream of film translation, subtitle translation is the main form of translation of the American situation comedy in China. Through the efforts of subtitle translators, different language cultural visitors can have understanding smiles as those viewers who are from the native language culture. In this way, the power of humor is deepened and amplified through the subtitling translation of the situation comedy. The subtitle of a situation comedy also delivers the information function to make foreign audience understand the process of plots of the situation comedy. In conclusion, subtitle translation really plays an important role in understanding the situation comedy to Chinese audience.This thesis is a study of the translation of the American situation comedy The Big Bang Theory in the light of Skopos Theory. For centuries, translation theory and practice can not get rid of the dominant idea of "faithfulness" or "equivalence". The translator has always been wandering about the dilemma between literate translation and free translation and tried in vain to meet both sides. Skopos Theory, born in the mid-to-late1970s, a theoretical revolution in contemporary translation studies, regards translation action as a purposeful intercultural action. The Skopos Theory states that translation actions all have specific purposes, which determine the whole process of translation. This thesis analyzes the three principles of Skopos Theory, and the strategies used in the translation of The Big Bang Theory.This thesis adopts The Big Bang Theory, this latest episode, as a case study of the object, and focuses on the research of the subtitle translation from the point of how can the translator of The Big Bang Theory satisfy both the purpose of the director and the expectation of the audience, and adapt to the own features of subtitle translation of the situation comedy to make a clear and effective subtitle translation. In order to effectively analyze the translation strategies of The Big Bang Theory under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, the author of this thesis chose many examples.
