Based On Bi-directional Parallel Corpus Poor Than The The Sentence Translation Comparative Study

Inequality comparative sentences exist both in Chinese and English are one kind of important sentences which convey the meaning of comparison between things and people, although they belong to deferent type of language. Grounded on contrastive linguistics and translation theory with the method of quantitative statistical research, this thesis has focused on a contrastive study on the mutual translation of inequality comparative sentences between English and Chinese. For doing that, we built a two-way parallel Chinese-English corpus about 1.02 million characters/words. Through investigation, we found that:1. The English inequality comparative sentences are more often used than the Chinese inequality comparative sentences, for in Chinese-English corpus nearly 0.68 million characters we only found 361 original Chinese inequality comparative sentences while in about 0.34 million words English-Chinese corpus we found 366 original English inequality comparative sentences; 2. No matter in Chinese or English, the ratio of superior comparative sentences is higher than inferior comparative sentences that reflected the common way in comparison. 3.Based on the two-way parallel Chinese-English corpus, around 75% Chinese comparative sentences translate into English comparative sentences in Chinese-English corpus, while nearly 69% English comparative sentences translate into Chinese comparative sentences in English-Chinese corpus which indicates that that Chinese comparative sentences have a higher correspondent ratio in Chinese-English translation than the English comparative sentences do. We think that except the influence of different translator's personal style, the distinction between English and Chinese in language type is the main cause. Both "bi" and "more...than" are the most complex sentences in syntax and semantics and have a very complicated correspondence each other. As for "buji" in Chinese and "less...than" in English, the ratio of correspondence in English -Chinese translation is higher than the ratio in English-Chinese translation, we consider it is effected by the way of Chinese inferior comparative expression.
