A Report On Translation Of Stem Cell Biology(Excerpt)

Translating medical works in western countries will be of great importance in developing Chinese modern medicine.This report makes a medical paper as the translation material,the author made a case analysis on the problems during translation and discussed translation strategies relatively.The source text is an assignment provided by the head of research and development in Tuohua Biology.Moreover,it's a paper called Liver Stem Cell,chosen from a book called Stem Cell Biology,while there is no Chinese version.The source text illustrates some related knowledge about liver stem cell,including the formation and function of liver as well as factors playing a role in liver regeneration together with some experiments.The author made adequate preparation before translation and began to translate after having an overview of text features of medical text,then made proofreading for three times,including self-examination,reading parallel texts for reference and professional-examination.Next,the author listed out four problems during translation.Firstly,the author discussed the translation of technical terms by using two translation strategies,one is selecting meaning for semi-technical words,and the other is reading parallel texts to confirm the meaning of terminology.Secondly,the author illustrates two ways to translate the passive voice,which are preservation of passive voice as well as converting into active voice.Thirdly,the author states four methods of dealing with long and complex sentences,including division,inversion,literal translation and addition of necessary information.Fourthly,the author states that it's helpful to take both the source text and figures into consideration during translating the description of figures.Finally,the author made suggestions to translators who will do medical translation in the future,it's crucial to better understand the differences in lexicon and syntax between English and Chinese.Moreover,it's necessary to broaden knowledge so as to select appropriate meanings from the semantic domain of specialized knowledge.
