Xu Youren(1287—1364)was one of the few Han bureaucrat to a dignitary in the middle-late of Yuan Dynasty. He had nearly 50 years political career, served seven emperors. For saved the Yuan Dynasty,he returned the politics and provided the defense policy and summon strategy. As the Yuan’s loyal official,he showed a strong pursuit for political life. But in his middle age,he had entered the officialdom six times and retired six times in his official-reclusion alternation, during this 20 years period, his reclusion periods added up to 12 years.Xu Youren’s pursuit for politics and desire for seclusion presented the contradiction and complexity of his official-reclusion mind, which was typical of Yuan’s upper middle class officials. The first chapter of the thesis, taking his Ci-poem for primary research text, discusses the evolvement trace of Xu Youren’ official-reclusion state of mind.In different life phases, his official-reclusion mind showed different character: in his prime,he was politically active;in his mid-life,he described himself an idle man not harnessed with duties;in his old age,he abandoned himself to pome and alcohol. The second chapter analyses the reasons of Xu Youren’s pursuit for politics and desire for reclusion. In Yuan Dynasty, there was strong cultural conflict between Mongolian and Han and the decline of the Confucianism, which had hastened parturition Xu Youren’s mission consciousness to inherit Confucianism and to shelter poor scholars; On the other hand, the cultural conflict and the national discrimination triggered his alienation sense to the politics, the powerlessness after the effort, and feeling of shame and loss without any success, which cued his thirst for retirement. The third chapter, around Xu Youren, explores the cultural significance of the upper middle class scholars’ official-reclusion mind.First,we summarize the official-reclusion mind of the early Yuan’s scholars before Xu Youren, including the unprivileged scholars’ Confucian orthodoxy reclusion and secularized reclusion, and the officials’ mind to acculturate Yi by Xia.Different from these minds,Xu Youren’s official pursuit was under the influence of Confucianism, embracing Dynastic identity and pride.Compare to the lower class scholars, upper middle class officials presented strong Confucian status consciousness and Confucian cultural awareness.By flaunting Confucian morals and advocating elegant literary style, they had played an important role in ascending the cultural power of the scholar-bureaucrats and inheriting Confucianism. In the conclusion section,we summarize Xu Youren’s official-reclusion behavior and mind.As a fine specimen of Yuan’s upper middle class officials, the contradiction and complexity of Xu Youren’s official-reclusion mind reflected the particularity of Yuan’s political environment and culture ecology.Although they didn’t have many achievements in their official career, they still played a crucial role in cultural heritage and innovation.
