| Every work of literature, and even every subtle symbol in it,is a reflection of the author’s thoughts at that time. When studying Fei Ming,a writer with changeable styles and often obscure works,it is particularly important to comprehensively and specifically control the development of his thoughts."Reclusive characteristic" is the most distinctive label of Fei Ming, and the 1920 s was his most important period of creation. Therefore, this paper takes the reclusive characteristic in the thought of Fei Ming as a clue, limits the period of study to the1920 s,and tries to interpret Fei Ming from the peculiar images written by him in chronological order,so as to reflect on what effect the reclusive characteristic has had on the life and writing of Fei Ming.To understand a person,we first understand his background.Judging from the environment in which Fei Ming grew up,his hometown,Huangmei,Hubei has profound Zen heritages. The culture of Buddhism and Zen has the connotation of reclusive,so the threshold for reclusive is not high for Fei Ming who had been nurtured by this atmosphere since his childhood;at the same time, the treatment of "a superfluous person" under the patriarchal family,as well as many life-threatening diseases were also closely related to the formation of Fei Ming’s reclusive thoughts. It is under the joint action of these three important elements that Fei Ming developed a complex, changeable and unique temperament. The vicissitudes of the Revolution of 1911,the Wuchang Uprising and the ebb of the May Fourth Movement made Fei Ming feel depressed, which was directly reflected in his original creations. In addition,Hu Shi was one of Fei Ming’s earliest mentors. The effect of the experimentalism thoughts he believed in and the Effort Weekly in his hands on Fei Ming is also worth noting.Zhou Zuoren had a great influence on Fei Ming. The direct reason why Fei Ming frequently visited Kuyuzhai is that he and Zhou Zuoren had a common need to relieve loneliness and anxiety in his heart. The two were able to maintain such a profound bond, basically because they had close personalities. The change of Zhou Zuoren’s individualistic outlook on life, which focused on cultivating "his own garden",was an important prerequisite for the development of their friendship. The literary outlook and outlook on life conveyed by Fei Ming in this period often embodied the thought of "Ellis-Zhou Zuoren".Fei Ming’s moderate attitude inhibited his enthusiasm for active earthly fighting and became a breeding ground allowing his reclusive thoughts to continue to grow.In terms of his creation,"plain" and "obscure" are the two most distinctive stylistic features in Fei Ming’s writing, and they actually reflect the acceptance and imitation of Zhou Zuoren by Fei Ming. However,Fei Ming’s obscure writing style was sometimes due to his unique pursuit of an art form, which had nothing to do with Zhou Zuoren.During the period of Yu Si,under the influence of Lu Xun,the reclusive thought of Fei Ming changed.Through his empathy for Kong Yiji’s image,Fei Ming had the desire to know Lu Xun.Until Lu Xun went south,in the period of Yu Si,his visits to Lu Xun and the references to Lu Xun in his works were far more than Zhou Zuoren. With the deepening of his understanding of Lu Xun,Fei Ming became more and more close to Lu Xun in thought, and his reclusive side was replaced by the enthusiasm for social criticism. The Willows by the River by Fei Ming was a declaration of his ideological change, and it also represented his identification with the path;in the written polemics with the literati of the "Modern Review" school, his reclusive thoughts gradually faded, and he dared to criticize the reactionary Beiyang Military Government. The appearance of the pseudonym “Fei Ming” was actually a sign of the real completion of his ideological transformation. In addition,Peach Garden,Fei Ming’s second novel collection, still reflected the continuation of his combativeness. With his disappointment of the Northern Expedition Revolution, the political ideal of Fei Ming was shattered, and gradually became down-hearted.Losing his direction,he even fell into a predicament of existence. With Zhang Zuolin’s reorganization of Peking University,Fei Ming started his time of living alone in Xishan, where he regained his fighting spirit during the Yu Si period.During the Xishan period, the creation of the novel collection Jujube actually embodied Fei Ming’s attempt to solve the predicament of existence, but he was not able to do so completely.Coupled with his misunderstanding and dissatisfaction with Lu Xun’s left-leaning turn,Fei Ming returned to a reclusive state of mind in the early 1930 s. |
