As a distinctive defense facility at the city gate,Barbican Entrance have not been clearly studied in the process of its development and overall features in the early stages of the city.Based on the published archeological data,this thesis teases out materials of Barbican Entrance found in the early cities and studies the shape,structure,construction technology,functions,and relationships with other defense facilities of Barbican Entrance in the early cities.The thesis is divided into five chapters:Chapter One is introduction.First of all,it defines the concept of early cities and Barbican Entrance and the temporal and spatial ranges,briefly reviews the research history and research status of relevant issues in the academic circle,and introduces the research purpose,significance,and methods used in the research.Chapter Two is the discovery and confirmation of Barbican Entrance.It is mainly divided the development of early Barbican Entrance into three stages: Yangshao period,Longshan period,and Xia-shang period,combing the discovery of each stage.It is believed that the early Barbican Entrance experienced three stages: the birth stage of the Yangshao period,the emergence stage of the Longshan period,and further development stage of Xia-shang period.Chapter Three studies the shape,structure and construction of Barbican Entrance.It summarizes and concludes the plane shape and location of Barbican Entrance,analyzes the conditions of walls,gateways and doors,roads,gatehouses,gate towers,piers,and square that constitute Barbican Entrance,and studies the construction materials and methods of Barbican Entrance.It is believed that the plane shape in the early Barbican Entrance can be distributed into five types: irregular form,elongated shape,trisquare,rectangle,and trapezoid.The structure includes walls,gateways,roads,gatehouses,gate towers,piers,squares,etc.The north is mostly made of stone,while the Central Plains are mostly soil.Chapter Four discusses the function of Barbican Entrance and its relationship with other defense facilities.It studies the function of Barbican Entrance in defense during wartime and its daily use,as well as the relationship between Barbican Entrance and other defensive facilities,such as moats and mamian-towers.It is believed that Barbican Entrance has functions of military defense,daily management,flood control,and decoration,and cooperates with moats and mamian-towers to strengthen the defensive capabilities at the city gate.Chapter Five is conclusion,which summarizes the main ideas and points out the deficiencies of this thesis.
