With the booming of Chinese national comprehensive strength and international influence year by year,Chinese films,as the courier of Chinese culture, begin to go abroad and exhibit the charm of oriental culture to the whole world. The subtitling translation of Chinese films play a significantly crucial role in promoting the spread of Chinese culture and the cultural exchange between China and the West. Thus, particularly important it is to explore the subtitling translation of Chinese films, especially the study of translators. This thesis applies Eco-translatology to the subtitling translation of Chinese films, and adopts the combined method of qualitative research and case analysis, under the core theoretical framework of "an approach to translation as adaptation and selection",to analyze the adaptation and selection of Linda Javin’s subtitling translation of Chinese films in the translational eco-environment.This thesis emphatically discusses the following questions:How the translator manifests the leading function of choosing the translation object?During the process of film subtitling translation,in which translation strategies the translator chooses and exerts to better adapt to the needs of the translational eco-environment?What relationship exists between translator’s adaptation and selection?Main achievements of the thesis are:Translators are the leading role to guide the whole process of film subtitling translation. The translator’s selection towards translation objects is the result of translators’ own ability as well as both internal and external demanding adaptation.Simultaneously, the translator’s leading function is represented at selective conversion of the translator towards multi-dimensional adaptation of film subtitling translation in the eco-environment.The translator’s translation strategies can be investigated from three dimensions in the process of film subtitling translation:the linguistic dimension, the cultural dimension and the communicative dimension. At the linguistic dimension, the translator chooses translation strategies of expansion, omission, deletion and so on.At the cultural aspect, the translator carries out translation strategies of substitution, condensation, literality and so on.At the communicative dimension, some strategies of generalization, domestication and reductive paraphrasing are adopted. The film subtitling translation is the alternating cycle process of an interaction between translator’s adaptation and selection;only under the condition by adapting to the eco-environment of the target language, can the translation survive and develop healthily. This thesis provides an effective reference for the study of film subtitling translation from the perspective of Eco-translatology.Linda Javin herself,as the translator of Chinese film subtitling,as well as the films translated by her won great recognition and awards in overseas. The study of her translations provides useful guidance for translational learners and working personnels engaging in the film subtitling translation.
