Extracurricular English reading plays an important role in improving primary school students’ English speaking ability and vocabulary memory capability.Meanwhile,it enriches primary school students’ knowledge and improves their cognitive ability.It also has a positive effect on the quality of English teaching.However,there are some existing problems restrict the effective implementation of extracurricular English reading nowadays.This essay takes YongJingyuan Primary School for example.According to the surveys about the current situation of students’ extracurricular English reading,we discovered that there are some aspects need to be improved include lack of time to read,weak reading effects,inadequate reading initiative and deviation of reading content,etc.There are several aspects of reasons,including the aspects of school,teachers,and family,etc.The reasons are old-fashioned educational philosophy,lack of enough English teachers,unreasonable teachers’ evaluation system and defective curriculum and so on from the aspect of school.And from the aspect of English teachers,it includes old fashioned teaching methods,insufficient knowledge reserves,inaccurate understanding of outside reading and so on.From the aspect of parents,it includes parents’ old-fashioned reading concept,poor reading environment,and lack of money input and so on.The reasons are weak English reading atomosphere and lack of reading resourses from the aspect of society.From the aspect of students,it includes not enough English knowledge,mismatch of thinking ability and English language level,little free time and bad reading habit,and so on.According to these problems,this essay comes up with the strategy that the effort should be made through cooperation among school,teachers,family,students and society.The school should upgrade teaching philosophy from time to time,create material conditions and provide students with intellectual support.Teachers should adjust the roles from a regular to an organizer of extracurricular English reading,from a lecturer to a collaborator,from a controller to a guide in the process of extracurricular English reading.Parents should change their family education philosophy,invest more money,actively participate in the process of extracurricular English reading and set an example for the children.At the same time,parents should create a good reading environment for the children.Society should publicize the benefits of reading outside,attract more investment on primary school students’extracurricular English reading,and enrich English reading resourses,etc.Students should read English books consciously,widen the quantities of English reading,form a good habit of making good use of English reading tools,take notes and think while reading.The goal of improving the effect of primary school students’ extracurricular English reading will be achieved through the joint effort of school,teachers,family,students and society.
