Today in the 21 st century, with the continuous advancement of modernization,China-foreign exchanges have become more frequent. As an international language,English has received more and more attention in our national education. As one of the important ways of language input,English extracurricular reading is not only conducive to improving students’ comprehensive English language ability, but also to broadening students’ international perspective.Primary school students’ English outside reading also plays a vital role in English learning throughout the elementary study. The National Primary and Secondary School English Extracurricular Reading Initiative released by the First National Primary and Secondary School English Reading Teaching Seminar in 2016 and The Chinese Elementary and Middle School Students’ English Graded Reading Standards(experimental draft)published in the same year have further highlighted the importance of primary school students’ extracurricular English reading. This study mainly uses questionnaire surveys and interviews to investigate the current situation of extracurricular English reading among primary school students in Y primary school in N city. The study mainly draws on the nine basic elements of foreign language reading literacy of primary and middle school students in China, which are summarized by Professor Wangqiang and others from Beijing Normal University, and selects some of these elements to design this questionnaire on the current situation of extracurricular English reading for primary school students. The survey content mainly includes five dimensions: primary school students’ English extracurricular reading habits,English extracurricular reading experience,English extracurricular reading materials,English extracurricular reading methods, and reading obstacles during English extracurricular reading.Through the investigation, several problems have been found, such as lack of good English reading habits, lack of guidance in selecting materials for extracurricular English reading, inappropriate use of reading strategies, lack of knowledge of English language and culture, and insufficient attention from school teachers and parents. In view of these problems, the author analyzes the causes in detail, and finally put forward suggestions and measures to improve the current situation of English extracurricular reading for primary school students from the perspectives of teachers, parents and school.First of all, teachers need to mobilize students’ subjective initiative, stimulate their interest in English extracurricular reading, help students understand the meaning of it,and change their way of thinking.Focus on guiding English reading outside of class.By pursuing open reading methods, create a relaxed atmosphere for students.Secondly, parents need to change their thinking mode and simultaneously emphasize the importance of English extracurricular reading. At the same time, parents should also cultivate the habit of reading with their children, ensure their reading time, and promote their children to develop good reading habits. In addition, teachers should take the responsibility of recommending reading materials.Parents should play the role of purchasing reading materials, make full use of convenient online resources, and select the best English extracurricular reading materials for their children. At the school level, schools should actively advocate and gradually optimize English extracurricular reading activities, such as using the empty window period of school collective activities to organize school-wide reading clubs from time to time.At the same time, strengthen communication between different classes and schools, and encourage students to exchange recommendations.
