In the mind of Chinese and Indonesian people,animals have always occupied a v ery important position;in fact many are the idiomatic expressions containing the morp heme of animal words.Generally speaking,these idiomatic expressions have complex meaning and strong symbolism.China and Indonesia not only have a different cultural and social background,they also have different psychological thinking and life custo ms,hence Indonesian and Chinese people knowledge of animals lies on different basis and concepts.Because of these cultural differences and understanding of animals,dur ing the acquisition of animal idiomatic expressions in Chinese,Indonesian students are influenced by their mother tongue and they run into mistakes.The main content of this dissertation is the quantitative and qualitative analysis a nd comparison between Indonesian and Chinese idiomatic expressions related to animal s,focusing on the lexical semantics and cultural linguistics.First,we discuss the mea ning and origin of Chinese and Indonesian idioms,the main features and the syntactic function of both Chinese and Indonesian idioms related to animal species and categor ies.In addition,we discuss the surface meaning and connotation of animal idioms sig nificance.Then,we would deal with several aspects of China and Indonesia's animal i dioms from the perspective of geographical environment,customs and habits and religi ous beliefs.Finally,we would analyze China and Indonesia population differences in t erms of emotions and attitude towards animals,finding out the root of semantic and c ultural differences.I hope that through this article,Indonesian students would be more aware about Chinese animal idioms and would learn how to use properly Chinese idioms related to animals.
