Objective Our study aimed to determine the correlation between the drinking behavior before or after in patients with schizophrenia and the scores of the positive and negative syndrome Scale(PANSS).Methods A total of 332 patients with schizophrenia were recruited from three mental health centers in Anhui Province.Participants recruited from May 2018 to December 2018 completed baseline surveys on age, sex, financial situations and health history by a questionnaire.According to the 332 questionnaires, all patients were divided into three groups based on the drinking behavior before or after the first-episode schizophrenia: Group ?: patients without drinking behavior,Group ?: patients with drinking behavior before an episode of schizophrenia and Group ?: patients with drinking behavior before and after an episode of schizophrenia.Symptom severity was measured using PANSS.The relationship between drinking behavior of patients with schizophrenia and PANSS scores was evaluated by the multiple linear regression analyses.Association between drinking behavior and PANSS score:a multiple linear regression analysisResults Of 332 participants,25.6%(n? =? 85)consumed alcohol before the first-episode of schizophrenia and 16.0%(n? =? 53)reported persistent drinking. There was a statistically significant difference between Group ? and Group ?.Compared with the patients of Group ?,the patients of Group ? had significantly higher PANSS positive score,PANSS negative score,PANSS general psychopathological score and PANSS total score(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in scores of PANSS between the Group ? and the group I(P>0.05).Furthermore,the PANSS positive score(?=4.700,95%CI:2.469~6.931),PANSS general psychopathological score(?=6.308,95%CI:2.371~10.245)and PANSS total score(?=12.893,95%CI:5.519~20.266)in the Group ? were greatly increased compared with the Group ? after adjusting for the confounding variables through multiple linear regression analytical methods.Compared with the non-drinking group, the other scores were higher than that of the non-drinking group, and the difference was of statistical significance(P<0.05).The scores and total scores of PANSS in the moderate and higher drinking group were higher than that of the non-drinking group, and the difference was of statistical significance(P<0.05).The multivariate linear regression analysis after the adjustment of the confounding factors still found that the positive component of PANSS(? = 4.658,95% CI: 2.241~7.705),the general psychopathological component table(? = 5.804,95% CI: 1.588-10.021)and the total score of the scale(? = 11.763,95% CI: 3.766-19.761)were higher in the mild drinking group than in the non-drinking group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The positive components of PANSS(? = 4.795,95% CI: 0.127-8.297),negative component table score(? = 4.212,95% CI: 0.127-8.297)and the total score of the scale(? = 15.159,95% CI: 1.946-28.372)were higher than those of the moderate or higher drinking group? = 4.212,95% CI: 0.127-8.297),and the difference was significant(P<0.05).Conclusion This study demonstrated that the sustained alcohol consumption in schizophrenia patients were positively associated with the PANSS scaling scores.Timely quitting alcohol after first episode of schizophrenia is beneficial to control clinical symptoms. The control of the disease after the onset of schizophrenia is associated with the degree of alcohol consumption, and the higher the degree of alcohol consumption is closely related to the high PANSS score.
