ObjectiveThis study aims to observe the therapeutic effect and safety of Shu-Mu points acupuncture combined with close needling then provide the clinical evidence for treating primary osteoporosis.MethodsIn this clinical randomized single-blind controlled trial,72 patients with primar y osteoporosis were divided into the following two groups. In the treatment group,Shu-Mu points acupuncture combined with close needling were given to 36 patien ts for three months(three times a week). In the control group, alendronate sodium was orally administered to another 36 patients for three months(once a week). We then statistically analyzed the changes of bone mineral density(BMD),Vis-ual analo gue scale(VAS),Oswestry disability index(ODI),Self-Ralting Anxie-ty Scale(SAS),TCM symptoms and thus the clinical efficacy and difference in two groups. Also,we compared the safety of these two therapeutic methods.Results1.Case completion36 cases were recruited in the treatment group and 32 cases were completed the trial according to the protocol(4 cases excluded).36 cases were recruited in the control group,33 effective cases were completed the trial according to the protocol(3 cases excluded).2.Baseline comparisonIn both groups, there was no significant difference of(P>0.05)gender,age,course of disease,BMD score,VAS score,ODI score, and SAS score,TCM symptoms(before treatment). There was comparability between two groups.3.BMD comparisonAfter treatment for three months, there was no significant difference in levels of bone mineral density in both groups(P>0.05);At the same time, there was also no significant difference in bone mineral density between the treatment group and the control group(P>0.05).4.VAS score,ODI score,SAS score and TCM symptoms comparisonAfter treatment for three months, the VAS score,ODI score, and SAS score,TCM symptoms score of the two groups were improved(P<0.01);the improvement of the treatment group was more obvious than that of the control group(P<0.01).5.Clinical effective rateAfter treatment for three months, the clinical effective rate of TCM symptom in the treatment group was 97.2% and that of the control group was 73.3%.The overall efficacy of Shu-Mu points acupuncture combined with close needling was more obvious than oral alendronate sodium(P<0.01).6.Safety comparisonThere were 2 cases of gastrointestinal reactions in the treatment group and 7cases of gastrointestinal reactions in the control group. There was statistically significance between the differences of these two groups(P<0.01).Conclusion1.Shu-Mu points acupuncture combined with close needling and oral alendronate sodium both can effectively relieve the degree of pain, waist and back dysfunction, and anxiety in patients with primary osteoporosis.2.Shu-Mu points acupuncture combined with close needling and oral alendronate slightly improves the bone mineral density in patients with primary osteoporos is,However, because of the longer bone metabolism cycle and the shorter observation cycle, the improvement was no statistical significance.3.Compared with oral alendronate sodium,Shu-Mu points acupuncture combi-ned with close needling is more effective in improving patients' pain, anxiety and dysfunction,TCM symptoms, and had cutting edges in safety and clinical effective rate.More work is also needed for further promotion and application of Shu-Mu points acupuncture combined with close needling.
