Objective: to observe the intervention effect of music therapy on anxiety, sleep quality and subjective well-being of the elderly, and explore new ways of daily care for the elderly. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study. The research subjects were 65 elderly people in a pension agency in Hangzhou. They were divided into experimental group(32 cases)and control group(33 cases). The members of the control group received the routine care from the pension agency, and the members of the experimental group received the extra music therapy for 8 weeks on the basis of the routine care. The intervention effects were evaluated in two groups before and after intervention using the Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)and the Subjective Well-being Scale for Chinese Citizen(SWBS-CC20).Results:(1)Anxiety.The difference was not statistically significant when comparing the total score of the SAS scale between the experimental group and the control group before intervention(P>0.05).For the experimental group, the total score of the SAS scale was 56.13 before intervention and 47.88 after intervention with statistically significant difference(P < 0.05),while the control group was 57.06 before intervention and 56.61 after intervention with no statistically significant difference(P>0.05).After intervention, the total SAS score of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group with statistically significant difference(P<0.05).(2)Sleep quality. After comparing the score of the PSQI scale between the experimental group and the control group before intervention, there was no statistically significant difference(P>0.05).The total score of the PSQI scale in the experimental group was 10.91 before intervention and6.88 after intervention with statistically significant difference (P<0.05),while the control group was 11.36 before intervention and 11.24 after intervention with no statistically significant difference(P>0.05).After intervention, the total score of the PSQI scale and the scores of sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep time, sleep disorder and hypnotic drugs of the experimental group were lower than those of the control group and lower than before intervention, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).It can be seen that music therapy can effectively improve the sleep quality of the elderly, especially in the sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep time, sleep disorders and hypnotic drugs.(3)Subjective well-being.There was no statistically significant difference in the score of the SWBS-CC20 scale between the experimental group and the control group before intervention(P>0.05).The total score of the SWBS-CC20 scale of the experimental group was 86.38 before intervention and 90.69 after intervention, which showed that it had statistically significant difference(P<0.05),while the control group was 85.06 before intervention and 85.39 after intervention with no statistically significant differences(P>0.05).After intervention, the total score of the SWBS-CC20 scale and the scores of target value, physical health, mental health and self-acceptance of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group and higher than before intervention, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).It can be seen that music therapy can effectively improve the subjective well-being of the elderly, especially in the target value, physical health, mental health, and self-acceptance.Conclusions: Music therapy can effectively improve the anxiety, sleep quality and subjective well-being of the elderly. It can be used as one of the daily care measures for the elderly, and be promoted and applied in places such as pension agencies and communities.
