Colorectal cancer is one of the main cancers that threaten human health.Because of the change of normal defecation mode and the loss of control over excretion, patients with enterostomy usually fall into a state of low self-esteem and low self-evaluation.Patients with permanent enterostomy often suffer from heavier economic pressures and public opinion pressures than temporary intestines because they need to buy, replace, and wear pockets for a long time. They often need to endure the disease alone and a strong sense of stigma, which has a serious impact on their quality of life. The aim of this study is to tell the story of the disease autonomously through the patients with enterostomy, and to explore the experience and response to the stigma of patients with enterostomy using a phenomenological perspective.Through semi-structured interviews and participatory observational research methods, the author conducted in-depth interviews with thirteen permanent enterostomy patients.Through the collection and analysis of interview data, the following three main themes were presented:(1)sickness experience of patients with enterostomy;(2)the disease adaptation strategy of patients with enterostomy;(3)the impression management strategy of patients with enterostomy. The study found that the process of stigma experience in patients with enterostomy experienced two processes:indifferent and depressive.Although they fall into inferiority and low self-identity,they also actively seek strategies to deal with the negative effects of disease, such as positive disease attribution, changing bad habits, and finding suitable care.In response to the stigma attached to society,in order to create a normal person's social identity, they adopted an adaptive impression management strategy and a protective impression management strategy. Each strategy is closely related to the patient's perception of different interacting objects.
