ObjectivesTo understand the level of sleep quality of college students in a vocational medical college and to identify factors that influences sleep quality of the college students,The aim of this study was to understand sleep quality status of medical college students and to provide scientific basis for comprehensive intervention of sleep in college students.MethodsBy using stratified cluster sampling, students in a medical college were divided into grades 1 to 2 and 14 classes were randomly selected from the whole group of each grade for questionnaire survey.A total of 1458 students were selected and investigated with Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)to assess the sleep quality. The total score of PSQI >7 was classified as poor sleep quality.Database was built with double entry and validation by Epidata 3.1 software.SPSS(version 17.0)was used for statistic description. The statistical methods included statistical description, univariate analysis and logistic regression analysis.Results1.Totally 1550 medical college students were investigated, only 1458 questionnaires were retracted,so the effective collect rate was 94.06%.2.The average sleep time of 1458 college students was(7.51±1.10)h.The total average PSQI score of 1458 medical students were(4.92±2.73).The scores of each factor were respectively: subjective sleep quality(0.85±0.70),sleep latency(0.84±0.78),sleep duration(0.87±0.86),habitual sleep efficiency(1.06±1.10),sleep disturbance(0.79±0.51),use of sleep medication(0.03±0.24),daytime dysfunction(0.47±0.56).3.The PSQI score of girls(4.99±2.66)was higher than that of boys(4.39±2.88).The PSQI scores of higher vocational medical students from rural areas(5.00±2.66)were higher than those from urban areas(4.61±2.79).The PSQI scores of higher vocational medical students with different professional satisfaction were different. The PSQI scores of students who were not very satisfied with their majors were the highest(5.53±2.56),while those who were very satisfied with their majors were the lowest(4.43±2.89).The PSQI score of students who had late night snack(5.28±2.83)was higher than that of students who did not have late night snack(4.75±2.63),and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).4.262(18%)students had sleep quality problems, according to Chinese scale rating standards(PSQI>7).The incidence of sophomore students(20.50%,139 cases)was higher than that of freshmen(15.77%,123 cases). The incidence of students who had late night snack(22.71%,94 cases)was higher than that of students who did not have late night snack(16.17%,168 cases). The incidence of students who had experienced failure in competition was higher(24.15%,50 cases). The incidence of students with bad roommate relationship(32.50%,13 cases)was higher than that of students with good roommate relationship(17.56%,249 cases). The incidence of sleep quality problems was higher in students who were away from family members for a long time(23.19%,125 cases),and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).5.Used the sleep quality(good or generally as 0,poor sleep quality as 1)as dependent variable, and factors with statistical significance in univariate analysis as independent variables for logistic regression analysis. The late night snack(OR=1.384),distance from family(OR=1.463)and depression(OR=1.941)were the important predictors for the prediction and interpretation of sleep disorders in medical college students(P<0.05).Conclusions1.The sleep time of higher vocational medical students could basically guarantee their physiological needs.2.The sleep quality of medical college students were not very well with 18% students suffering from poor sleep quality.3.Several factors could influence the prevalence of the sleep quality of medical college students, such as night snack, staying away from family, depression. It was necessary to take a comprehensive consideration for formulation of interventions.
