BackgroundPercutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG)is a method of providing enteral nutrition using endoscopy.Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is the preferred route of feeding and nutritional support in patients with a functional gastrointestinal system who require long-term enteral nutrition.PEG is a safe method of long-term feeding and has the advantages of being minimally invasive and convenient. The PEG techniques differ according to the insertion method, and include the pull type, and introducer type. The aim of this study was to compare the complications associated with the pull-type and introducer-type PEG insertion techniques.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 141 cases that had undergone PEG tube placement at our center from January 2010 to December 2016 and investigated the age, gender, underlying diseases, complications, and antibiotic therapy.ResultsComplications were encountered in 17/28(60.71%)pull-type PEG patients as compared to only 41/97(42.27%)introducer-type PEG patients. However, there were no statistically significant differences between the pull-type and introducer-type PEG insertion techniques in relation to complication rates in our study population. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of sex,or underlying diseases. The age of pull-type PEG is older than introducer-type PEG.PEG tubes of pull-type is more durable than those of introducer-type.In a multi-factor regression analysis, nasopharyngeal carcinoma(OR=4.635,P=0.007)was risk factor of patients who had undergone introducer-type PEG.ConclusionPEG insertion is considered a safe procedure. The pull-type and introducer-type PEG insertion techniques produce comparable outcomes, and physicians may c hoose either of these approaches according to the circumstances.
