[Objective]To evaluate the clinical significance of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG)in advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.[Methods]From January2013to January2014, a total of69patients with advancednasopharyngeal carcinoma who received PEG before chemoradiotherapy wereenrolled. During chemoradiotherapy, gastrostomy diet and nursing were supplied, adverse events, tolerance and nutrition indicators including weight and alcohol ofhuman albumin were detected as well.[Results]PEG were performed successfully on66patients, but failed in the other3patients. Ofthe66patients,4have not received concurrent chemotherapy because of metastasesand liver function damage,51of the remaining62patients could completely finished3cycles of concurrent chemotherapy, with the completion rate of concurrentchemotherapy at82.26%The weight change ranged from-11.91%to0.90%, with amean value of-5.42%±2.78%. Paired-sample t test of alcohol of human albuminbefore and after the treatment showed no significant difference (p=0.738). Grade Iradioactive oral cavity mucositis appeared in22.73%patients (15/66), Grade IIradioactive oral cavity mucositis appeared in59.09%patients (39/66), and13.64%patients (9/66) suffered Grade III radioactive oral cavity mucositis.[Conclusions]For patients with advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, preventative PEG improvedthe tolerance of chemoradiotherapy, reduce the incidence of adverse events. Theperiod of therapy interruption caused by sever adverse event were shortened as well,PEG also increased the completion rate of concurrent chemotherapy. Nutritionalstatus and living quality of patients are improved. In addition, PEG is a safe, economic and simple method.
