ObjectiveNasopharyngeal carcinoma is a primary malignant tumor of the nasopharynx commonly seen in southern China.Radiotherapy is still a major choice in clinical treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which has the highest incidence among various malignant tumors of head and neck in the country;however,a large number of studies show that radiotherapy can easily cause dry mouth, difficulty in opening the mouth and swallowing dysfunction in patients of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. As one of the most common side effects, swallowing dysfunction appears to be more serious than the other ones in patients after receiving treatment of radiotherapy.Although only mild dysfunction may be seen in the beginning, with symptoms aggravating, patients may not be able to eat and even suffer complications like pulmonary infection and malnutrition. Thus,to detect initial swallowing dysfunctions at the first stage and take prompt measures are essential in preventing and delaying worsening symptoms, which helps to improve the quality of life for patients by making multiple complications impossible.Acupuncture has positive curative effect in the treatment of swallowing dysfunction,by observing the recovery condition of patients with swallowing dysfunction after receiving radiotherapy, who are treated by combination of 3 Needle of Tongue in Jin's-3 needle and acupuncture, this paper aims to investigate the mechanism of acupuncture in treating swallowing dysfunction so as to provide theoretical basis for its clinical use and popularization.MethodsTo equally divide 60 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, who suffered from swallowing dysfunction after radiotherapy, into acupuncture group and control group by random. No acupuncture intervention was taken for control group except regular treatment;for acupuncture group, the 3 Needle of Tongue, the Four-Shen Point and the Stabilizing the Shen Point(EX-HN 3,GB 14)were taken for quick insertion, slow advancing and twisting needle-handle.Needles were retained for 30 mins each time while the needle-handle method of DaoQiTongJing be implemented every 10 mins.Patients were treated for once a day for 6 days;before and after each treatment,Kubota Water Swallow Test and M.D.Anderson Dysphagia Inventory were used to record related datas, which would be compared and organized so as to finish the statistical analysis.ResultsThe difference in age, gender and cause of the disease between two groups was not statistically significant(P>0.05),which show the comparability between two groups. Before the treatment, difference of two groups based on Kubota Water Swallow Test and M.D.Anderson Dysphagia Inventory was not statistically significant(P>0.05),which shows the comparability between two groups. After treatment, the acupuncture group saw an obvious downgrading in Kubota Water Swallow Test compared with the result before treatment, between which the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01);as for the control group,no obvious changes observed, which shows no statistical significance(P>0.05).Thus,the difference between two groups after treatment was statistically significant(P < 0.01),which indicates the efficacy of acupuncture in improving patients‘ swallowing function. When it comes to the comparison between two groups based on M.D.Anderson Dysphagia Inventory, acupuncture group has a lower score than before, making the difference statistically significant(P<0.01);no obvious change observed in the score of control group, showing no statistical significance(P>0.05).As a result, the difference between two groups after treatment was statistically significant(P<0.01),which proves that acupuncture can effectively improve patients' life quality. In 30 cases of acupuncture group, the treatment was proved to be markedly effective in 23 cases, effective in 5 cases and ineffective in 2 cases, the total effective rate was 93.3%,which indicates the significant effect.ConclusionAcupuncture has favorable effect in treating patients with swallowing dysfunction after receiving radiotherapy as well as in improving their life quality. To conclude,“3 Needle of Tongue” of “Jin's-3 Needle” is effective in treating patients with swallowing dysfunction after receiving radiotherapy, which makes it an ideal treatment with high security, prompt and lasting effect, worthy of clinical popularization.
