Objective In order to provide some references to reduce nursing turnover intention and stablilize the nursing team,the relationship between big-five personality and turnover intention,big-five personality and turnover decision paths of nurses were explored in this study.Method Totally 412 nurses from one A-A-A level general hospital in Wuhan,Hubei province were recruited by convenient sampling.A questionnaire about self-designed general information questionnaire,Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory(NEO-FFI),Turnover Intention Scale and turnover decision paths questionnaire were used to investigate the big-five personality,turnover intention and turnover decision paths of nurses.Result The nurses who have higher and much more higher level of turnover intention accounted for 64.56%of the surveyed nurses;The relationship between the neuroticism and turnover intention was significantly low of positive correlation(r=0.226,P<0.01);the relationship between extraversion and turnover intention was significantly low of negative correlation(r=-0.199,P<0.01);The correlation of openness to experience,agreeableness and conscientiousness on turnover intention is not significant;With hierarchical regression analysis,it was found that the dimensions of neuroticism and extraversion indicated 4.6%variance and 1.4%variance,respectively,totally 6%variance of turnover intention totally after controlling for demographic variables;Among 75 nurses who had exitquit experience,36%cannot be classified in 4 turnover desicidion paths,and sample size was insufficient to analyze the relationship between big five personality and its turnover decision path.Conclusion No correlation was found between other dimensions of the big-five personality traits and turnover intention except neuroticism and extraversion.The higher of neuroticism of the nurses,the higher turnover intention they have,the higher of extroversion the nurses,the lower turnover intention they have,but the predictability of neuroticism and extroversion on turnover intention is so low;The turnover decision paths proposed by Lee etal could be used to classify some nurses' turnover paths,yet the explanatory power is limited.In addition,possibly there are other turnover desicision paths existing among nurses.
