As a common disease in cats, feline lower urinary tract disease(FLUTD)seriously affects the quality of life and health of cats, and may even be life-threatening.There are many factors resulting in the occurrence of the disease, including improper diet, stress, tumors, iatrogenic factors, genetics and pathogenic infections, among which bacterial lower urinary tract infection(LUTI)in cats are more common and have a higher recurrence rate.At present, limited studies are available on FLUTD in China, especially the data on the uropathogenic bacteria inducing FLUTD,which causes that the diagnosis and treatment of the disease is relatively simple. The present study conducted a retrospective clinical study on FLUTD from cats in Wuxi for the past 2 years, which will provide references for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of FLUTD in cats. And then, the isolations and drug sensitivity analysis of pathogenic bacteria were futher carried out, which will provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of small animal clinical diseases.Study 1:Epidemiological investigation of FLUTD in cats in Wuxi.A total of 84 FLUTD cases from five chain hospitals in Wuxi from January 2017 to December 2018 were collected, and the information including sex, age, season and time, clinical symptoms, the results of laboratory tests, medical imaging diagnosis and different treatment options were statistically analyzed. The results showed that the number of FLUTD cases increased year by year.Of 84 FLUTD cases,90.48%(76/84)was male cats,9.52%(8/84)for female cats;and 0-4 years old cats accounted for 61.90%(52/84),followed by 30.95%(26/84)for 4?8 years old cats and 7.14%(6/84)for over 8 yearsold cats. The disease occured throughout the year, with the highest incidence rate 27.38%(23/84)from November to December.Based on the clinical symptoms of these 84 FLUTD cases,28.57%(24/84),54.76%(46/84)and 64.59%(54/84)cases manifested as urinary frequency, dysuria and hematuria,respectively.40%(34/84)showed increased white blood cell count.95%(19/20)of obstructive FLUTD showed acute renal failure(ARF).According to the incidence factors, there were 25%(21/84)of bacterial LUTI,23.81%(20/84)of feline spontaneous cystitis(FSC),44.05%(37/84)of lower urinary tract stones and 7.14%(6/84)mixed infections of lower urinary tract(LUT)stones and bacterial LUTI.Based on the treatment methods of FLUTD cases, the cure rate was 44.26%(27/61)in the 61 cases of conservative treatment, however the recurrence rate within one year was 55.74%(34/61);and 95.65%(22/23)were successfully cured in the 23 cases of surgical treatment. In cases of lower urinary tract stones, the cure rate of surgical treatment was 100%(20/20).This indicates that the cure rate of surgical treatment is significantly higher than that of conservative treatment.Study 2:Isolation,identification and drug resistance analysis of uropathogens in cats in Wuxi.Uropathogens were isolated and identified from 27 urine in cats with bacterial LUTI.The results showed that Escherichia coli(E.coli)was predominant pathogenic bacteria, accounting for 22.22%(6/27),followed by 14.81%(4/27)for Staphylococci, and Enterococcus faecalis,Acinetobacter,Proteus mirabilis and other bacteria had a low isolation rate. The results of the drug sensitivity test suggested that 27 pathogenic bacteria showed the different degrees of resistance to the different antibiotics, and some bacteria showed multiple drug resistance(MDR).Among them,E.coli had the highest resistance to ciprofloxacin and neomycin with the resistance rate of 83.33%.Staphylococcus had the highest resistance to ciprofloxacin and kanamycin with a resistance rate of 75%.Enterococcus faecalis had the highest resistance to ciprofloxacin and neomycin with a drug resistance rate of 100%.In 27 pathogenic bacteria, the resistance rate of ciprofloxacin was as high as 77.78%(21/27),however,cefotaxime had the highest sensitivity rate, accounting for 81.48%(22/27).These results provided the references for the treatment of the infectious FLUTD.
